Can one DUI change your career path?

Getting a DUI conviction on record – even just one – can potentially alter your life in more ways than you might anticipate.

This is especially true if you are just now embarking on your college journey, with your career paths lying ahead of you. Unfortunately, a DUI could create an impassible barrier to your ideal job.

Jobs that do not hire those with DUI records

The College Investor discusses the impact a DUI can have on your career. A DUI could have a notable impact on your ability to proceed forward with your job of choice for numerous reasons.

First, many jobs do not hire people with a DUI on record, no matter what the reason for the DUI or how many or few you may have. Even a first-time offense is enough to get you blacklisted from certain industries.

This includes jobs with the government, jobs that require a commercial driver’s license (CDL), and jobs involving children. Not only does this extend to childcare or daycare, but it also includes teaching positions, eliminating a huge field of employment.

Losing access to affordable schooling

With a DUI on record, you also have fewer opportunities to access affordable schooling, too. Most colleges will react to a DUI from a student by pulling any financial support they provided. This can include gifts, scholarships, awards and more.

They may even revoke your access to on-campus housing, forcing you to pay for off-campus housing at full costs instead.

Needless to say, if you cannot even get into the college you want, your prospects for job opportunities will likely decrease in general. Thus, it is important to treat any DUI charge seriously from the start.
